Decoding Old Family Photos: What Clues to Look For

Old family photos are treasures that can unlock valuable insights about your ancestors and their lives. However, understanding what these photos reveal requires a bit of detective work. Let your relatives and the internet help you figure it out.

Below are some tips that I have learned along the way while researching my own family tree.

You've got this!

1. Look at the Clothing

Fashion trends can help you estimate when a photo was taken. Pay attention to:

  • Women’s Clothing: Dresses with high necklines, puffed sleeves, or lace details can indicate the late 1800s or early 1900s.

  • Men’s Attire: Watch for top hats, bow ties, or pocket watches.

  • Children’s Outfits: Often, children's clothing styles closely followed adult fashion trends, but simpler.

2. Examine Hairstyles

Hairstyles can also provide time markers. For example, elaborate updos were common in the Victorian era, while shorter, bobbed hair was popular in the 1920s.

3. Analyze the Setting

The background can give context:

  • Studio Photos: Look for painted backdrops, furniture, or props that were common in formal portraits.

  • Outdoor Settings: These may reveal the family’s home, farmland, or neighborhood.

4. Check for Photographer Marks

Many older photos include the name and location of the photography studio. Use this information to narrow down the location and time period. This is really helpful with military photos!

5. Inspect Facial Features

Compare the faces in the photo to others in your collection. Look for similarities in facial structure, eye shape, or smiles to identify family members.

6. Focus on Contextual Details

  • Postcards: Photos printed on postcards were common in the early 20th century. The back of the card might include a date or location.

  • Jewelry or Accessories: These items might indicate social status or even cultural traditions.

7. Collaborate with Relatives

Share the photo with older relatives who might recognize the faces or remember stories related to the picture. Their insights can be invaluable.

8. Research Historical Events

If there are uniforms, flags, or other historical markers in the photo, they may correspond to a specific time period, such as a war or national celebration.

Best of luck!
